  • Year 6

Welcome to our Year 6 page.  Here, you’ll find snippets of what we are getting up to in and out of class. Parents, remember there’s lots more to see on your child’s Seesaw.

Today, Year 6 took part in an environmental art session run by Woodmatters on the National Trust Footprint site near Windermere.

The day was themed around the animal kingdom with a mix of green woodwork, tool use, charcoal making and drawing techniques, playing with clay and also a hands-on investigation of UK mammal skulls. We took home two wooden millipede sculptures for our school grounds that the children made by whittling wood. The sun shone, and we had a lovely time exploring the woodland and communing with nature. I'm sure they'll all sleep well tonight!!

Bryony from KAEFER UK & IRELAND delivered a fantastic workshop today called 'Scaffold the World.' We learnt all about what KAEFER do not just locally at Sellafield but across the world too. Then, working in teams, the children had to create their own scaffolding company, with the final challenge being to actually design and build a frame to support a large blow-up globe.

The children had to think of a company name, design a logo, create a slogan, and state what their ethos and values were. We also thought about different ways that companies can have a positive social impact on their communities.

It was brilliant to see such great teamwork on display, as well as resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Thank you for an exciting day, Bryony!

Today, Becks Skinner of Hardheads Heritage came into Year 6 to deliver the 'New Mrs Davidson Project.' This workshop is based on a wedding dress from 1911 that is currently on display in The Beacon Museum.

The children learnt about what life was like in Edwardian Egremont for Mrs Davidson, whose family home was where Olive Social is now. They found out that people made their own clothes back then and that the designs would depend on how wealthy (or poor!) you were. Becks let the children have a go at weaving and sewing and talked about how she'd designed the Edwardian-style outfit she was wearing.

Thank you for coming in, Becks, and for bringing history to life for the children.

To tie in with Science Week, had a very special visit from Pet Encounter. The children were absolutely thrilled to meet a variety of fascinating animals up close. We learnt about parrots, snakes, owls, and even an armadillo — discovering fun facts about their habitats and behaviours.

Year 6 had a fantastic time at West Lakes Academy. We attended a careers event and it was a brilliant opportunity for the children to explore a variety of career paths while taking part in engaging activities.

For Arts Week, we themed our work on our class text ‘The Last Bear.’ We used as many different media and techniques as we could to make sure we practised our skills. We used: collage, pointillism, sponging, acrylic paint, watercolour paint, chalk pastels, stencils, negative space and paint pens. We think it looks pretty fantastic — what do you think?

Today, Year 6 had a really exciting workshop with the STEM ambassadors from Sellafield LTD. They had to work as a team and solve clues to stop a cyber attacker whilst also learning about the importance of cyber safety. A wonderful day of learning, curiosity and fun!

Today, Dr Claire Johnson, from the Centre for Leadership Performance, delivered an exciting STEM workshop on behalf of Electricity North West. We learnt about how to stay safe around electricity, the different types of circuits and how components affect the resistance, and then had a go at actually building them ourselves.

Today, we had a visit from Children’s author Helen Haraldsen. She gave an inspiring presentation about perseverance, resilience, and goal setting. We learnt about writer identity and then had a very exciting Q&A session about books, writing, and publishing. Thank you, Helen!

Today, for Jennifer Carver Award Day, Year 6 designed and made their own seasonal soup. They worked in teams of 6 to select locally grown vegetables to add flavour, texture and colour to their recipe. We learned how it’s important to support local farmers and buy local so that our food doesn’t have food miles. Buying food from abroad is causing global warming because of the amount of fuel used to transport it across the world. The children made posters about this issue and also designed their own soup can label. Lots of peeling, chopping, eating and smiling today.

Today, Year 6 visited Lakes College to attend a science show that was delivered by The REACT Foundation and The Royal Institution. The show was an exciting journey through the stores of energy that surround us. From elastic to gravitational, kinetic to chemical, we enjoyed some fiery and explosive demonstrations of what energy is and how it affects our lives.

In our electricity topic today, we have been making and experimenting with different kinds of circuits. We explored the difference between a series and parallel circuit, and then made a circuit with a buzzer. As a final task, we used motors to design a fan to cool down Mrs W!

This half-term in PE, Year 6 are developing their netball skills. The children will learn about the fundamental principles of play and practise core skills such as: passing, receiving, pivoting, and outwitting defenders.

Our first topic in Art is drawing. Today, we practised our drawing skills with some cross-sections of fruit and vegetables. We wanted to show texture with pencil and add colour with watercolours and oil pastels.
