Welcome to Year 1's class page. Please have a look at what we have been getting up to in class!

Sports Day

What a fantastic day we had at Sports Day this year!

This week the children have started their rugby coaching with Marnie. They had lots of fun and learnt some new skills that they will continue to practice for the rest of the term.

Beegu

Today in class we have started reading 'Beegu' which is a fantastic story about a little alien getting stranded on Earth. Afterwards the children had to sequence the story and work in pairs to ask Beegu some questions. Later, some of the children had to pretend that they were Beegu and answer these questions in role.

Summer 1 Reading Challenge Certificates

Each half-term Year 1 are set extra reading challenges to complete at home. Here are this half-term's Bronze, Silver and Gold certificate winners.

Finding Podberries

Today the children found some podberries in our school forest. This was unusual as we have just been reading about them in our class story, 'Bob and the Moontree'. The children had to decide whether we should open them or not and in the end it was decided that we should just leave them as they might be poisonous.

The Space Race/Asking Questions to Neil Armstrong

In class we are continuing our topic on Neil Armstrong and have been doing some speaking and listening activities. First the children learned about the Space Race between America and Russia and the children had to decide whether or not NASA should send someone to the Moon. Then the children had to ask questions to Neil Armstrong and take part in a hot seating activity.

Planting Seeds

Today the children have been planting sunflower seeds and we are going to watch them grow over the next few weeks. Also we will be conducting an experiment to see how the amount of sunlight received effects the growth of three different seeds.

Moon Facts

Today the children have been doing a jigsaw activity to learn new facts about the Moon. First they had to research the facts on research tables and then when they returned to their home table they had to share what they had learned with others in their group. Then the children had to design a poster sharing what they had learnt and they had to present their poster to the rest of the class.

Spring 2 Reading Challenge Certificates

On the last day of term we had a Julia Donaldson themed party day and the children all dressed up as a character from the story.

Snack Shop Reward

As a reward for all of their effort, focus and hard work this term Year 1 got a special snack shop this week!

Weather Reporters

Today the children have been presenting the weather! First they had to pretend that they worked for Bookwell News and had to practice with their partners, before presenting the weather to the whole class. They also had to think carefully about how the weather would change what people would wear and include this in their presentation. They had a great time and showed a great level of confidence!

Year 1 Class Assembly

It was Year One's animal themed class assembly today. They shared lots of facts about animals and sang lots of different songs. They were fantastic!

Using Maps

Today the children have been learning about the equator and that the countries that are closest to it are generally warmer and those that are further away are colder. The children had to find the countries on the map and then read the key on another map to work out its weather conditions.

Painting the Weather

Today the children have been exploring how many of the great artists painted the weather - choice of colour, texture and brush strokes used. The all the children got the opportunity to go into the Rainbow Room and paint their very own picture of the weather.

World Book Day

Today at Bookwell we have celebrated our Harry Potter themed World Book Day. The children have completed lots of different Harry Potter related activities and have had an amazing time!

Thomas Farriner

Today in class we completed our Great Fire of London topic. First the children had to think of questions to ask Thomas Farriner and then they had to write opposing arguments for why he should or should not have gone to prison. The children decided that he should go to prison because he started the fire and he did not help his maid escape to safety.

Peter Bakare

Today in school we welcomed Peter Bakare, an olympic athlete who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics. First he got the children to complete an exercise circuit and then later on in the day he spoke to the whole school about his career and what motivated him to become an olympic athlete. The children even got the opportunity to ask him some questions.

First Aid Training

Today the children took part in some First Aid Training. First they had to watch videos of different scenarios and then they had to work out the best way to treat the casualty and how they should respond in each emergency situation. Then the children had a go at doing CPR and and using a defibrillator.

Finding a Dragon Egg

Today we went to the forest area to go on a bug hunt but when we got there we were surprised to find a colourful and spotty egg in a nest! The nest even had burnt straw in it so the children guessed that it must be a dragon's egg. We listened to the egg and could hear scratching noises inside and the children even found some dragon footprints!

We went back to class and we had to decide whether we should open the egg or leave it to hatch by itself. They had to work in pairs and use the word 'because to explain their reasons. In the end it was decided that we should leave the egg to hatch by itself because it was not ready to hatch and it needed more time.
Later on when we went to see the dragon egg we were surprised to find that the egg had hatched! The baby dragon had cracked out of the egg, left a glittery trail behind and then flew away.
